Objective:
The aim of the Align Nonprofit Leadership Three-Day Institute is to strengthen leadership and management skills of current and future nonprofit leaders. The comprehensive curriculum offers nonprofit executives, staff and board members skills in everything from day-to-day financial and personnel management to high-level leadership and strategic planning – skills leaders need to run a successful organization.

Why:
Nonprofit employees are mission-driven and passionately pursue positive impacts through organizational programs. The Align Nonprofit Leadership Institute builds on that passion by providing nonprofits with the tools they need to implement business-like discipline, innovation and action to run a successful organization that achieves a social mission.

How:
The three-day Institute is built around seven core topics combining public and private strategies to empower nonprofit leaders to enhance organizational capacity, impact and sustainability. The teaching and learning environment uses adult-learning strategies that allow participants to build new knowledge on existing knowledge, and to extend new knowledge to actions that can be implemented immediately or over the course of organizational development. Participants who complete the Three-Day Institute earn a Management Certificate from Align.

Who:
Everyone who is in a leadership role or desires to move into a leadership role in a nonprofit organization can learn at the Institute. The curriculum builds upon the core knowledge of the participants to take them to the next level of leadership. Board members will also benefit from this class.

What:
The seven core areas of the Institute are:

  • Foundations of Leadership:
Using the Align Leadership Model and proven self-assessment tools, students will examine and refine their leadership style.
  • Leading the Nonprofit Board:
Boards are a crucial element to any successful nonprofit. Students will develop skills for successfully working with boards of all types.
  • Strategic Planning:
While strategic planning is the role of the board and senior management, the task of making it happen usually falls to the nonprofit staff. This class will walk students through a mock session that will help identify the steps and possible pitfalls of a quality strategic planning session.
  • Outcomes Management and Evaluation:
Nonprofit organizations provide great services for their clients. This session is all about showing the world the good an organization does for others. Outcomes and Evaluations will share a clear and concise model to help identify and measure outcomes that show the difference an organization makes.
  • Financial Management:
This session builds a better understanding of the importance and use of basic financial statements toward achieving a programs goals and financial sustainability. Students will learn the ins and outs of basic financial statements and demonstrate how to use them in an organization.
  • Human Resource Management:
Human Resources (HR) can be one of the most challenging aspects of day-to-day operations, even if an operation is very small. We will give students an overview of the relevant HR rules and regulations, as well as some HR processes such as recruitment and retention.
  • Fundraising:
Let’s be honest, we know everyone would rather be doing the good work of an organization than fundraising, but how can good work happen without money? We will discuss the best practices for nonprofit fundraising and the role everyone plays in successfully developing funds for an organization.
